Covance Associate Director, Strategic Marketing in Madison, Wisconsin

Job Overview:

As an Associate Director, Strategic Marketing you will initiate, develop and implement marketing and positioning strategies and tactics for Early Development (ED). You will help assess the market trends, recommend and define marketing strategy plans and priorities and direct associated marketing activities with Senior Director of Marketing for ED that include but are not limited to:

  • Gathering market information on industry trends, customer needs/perceptions/gap assessment and key competitors, and use this information to identify marketing strategies to differentiate ED, as well as to provide the commercial team with key areas of focus and value propositions in their selling efforts to win.

  • Partner with ED Senior Director, ED business stakeholders and Enterprise stakeholders to understand, define and help recommend strategic initiatives, maximize investments and drive integrated ED solutions within the ED business unit (BU) and for associated connect-solutions across the enterprise.

  • Innovate our marketing by directing and overseeing ED marketing channel strategy for traditional and digital marketing channels including social, web, email, SEO/PPC. Identifying best practices and trends within and outside of the CRO industry to improve customer engagement, targeting and impact.

  • Work across multiple service areas and BUs to effectively position key differentiation attributes, value proposition and segmentation messaging. The successful candidate will be proactive and collaborative, possess sound business judgment and excellent people skills, and have the capacity to manage multiple projects with aggressive deadlines in a collaborative, cross-BU effective manner.

  • Collaborate on the design and evaluation of targeted marketing campaigns and materials that drive awareness of and preference for our brand, in conjunction with other Strategic Marketers, Demand Marketing, Sales leaders and internal scientific subject matter experts – both within the BU and across the enterprise to connect and integrate customer solutions.

  • Work with Marketing colleagues to monitor performance of strategies through measurement and analysis of market penetration, opportunity creation and funnel management. Lead modifications for improvement and best practices for future programs.

  • Collaborate with the sales team on key customer initiatives / presentations that align with brand and segment strategies that enhance relationships with our customers and drive the value proposition.

  • Collaborate with Marketing colleagues across the business to influence and integrate offerings that align to and maximize ED business strategy and priorities.


  • Minimum of a BA/BS

  • preferably in marketing

  • science and/or healthcare related field a strong plus

  • MBA degree a strong plus

  • Working knowledge of healthcare industry, CRO & regulatory environment acumen a plus

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Team orientation – to lead/influence and build connections across large organizations

  • Strong analytical, time management and interpersonal skills

  • Must be a self-motivator – willing to influence events to achieve goals

  • Skilled in using PC based hardware and software including Microsoft WORD, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, and digital/web collaboration tools. Marketing automation tools a plus.

  • Willingness to travel globally - 20% travel

  • 10+ years marketing domain experience within marketing and sales environment

  • Experience with social media, web, digital and omni-channel marketing

  • Experience with customer marketing program planning, development, and implementation.
