We are seeking a Director of External Laboratories. This position will be responsible for the following:

Strategy and Business Development

  • Responsible for the creation and implementation of all aspects of the Expanded Laboratory Management Solutions strategy including, but not limited to:

  • Coordination of the Service Development Process with marketing to examine current service and potentially expand capabilities via a new service launch

  • Define and maintain the appropriate level of staffing and expertise to support the strategy

  • Understand the marketplace and how to optimally position the service to generate additional revenue growth

  • Listen to both internal and external client feedback, and adjust course as needed.

  • Define and implement the expanded laboratory operational review scheme for each category of laboratory using specific and defined metrics

  • Provide quarterly reviews of expanded testing and offer options for internalization

  • Working with Commercial Development, define and maintain a profitable pricing structure in line with the strategy

  • Define the transition of all processed and pricing structure to the strategy

  • Collaborate with the Director of Global Laboratory Support Services and Global Lab Directors to meet the emerging needs of our clients

  • Ensure complete and on time fulfillment of client requests and audit findings;

  • Responsible to ensure that all other departments supporting the strategy have the appropriate capacity and expertise to support the strategy and emerging needs.

  • Responsible to provide support to Sales during pre-win activities - participates in client visits, audits and inquiries as needed;

  • Responsible to provide the appropriate information to requests coming through the NSSO process as it affects expanded laboratory capabilities

  • Work with the Strategic Sourcing group to ensure active contracts are in place for all outsourced laboratories (LSA or MSA)

  • Work with the Quality Assurance department to ensure appropriate audit scheme implemented, audits reports reviewed and executive summaries provided to client as defined client by client

Performance Monitoring and Evaluation

  • Develops, monitors, and manages global processes and performance metrics (KPIs) pertaining to the expanded laboratories;

  • Provide monthly and quarterly performance reviews to the Director of Lab Support Solutions and the VP of Testing Solutions and Technical Affairs with recommendations

  • Evaluates production and processes to detect adverse patterns and trends;

  • Collaborates with senior management in resolving adverse trends and elevates issues to the Director of Laboratory Support Solutions, Quality Assurance, Finance (Commercial Development), Sales and Marketing, Client Management (Project Management and Data Management) as needed

  • Ensures the timely and efficient scheduling and execution of all support activities essential to the operation of the department and the service globally including other departments as listed in the summary;

  • Responsible for timely and efficient work output within each functional area in accordance with Covance quality standards;

  • Provides timely and professional communications with client contacts in areas of expertise;

  • Evaluates processes to detect adverse trends; provides corrective measures as needed;

  • Supports Six Sigma and other process improvement initiatives.


  • Ensures the global team utilizes and fully understands resource capacity model

  • Ensures resources are sufficient to meet established timelines and quality goals;

  • Ensures that management resources are available to oversee the global operations of the department;

  • Ensures sufficient trained and competent personnel are available and properly supervised to meet the workload requirements and to fulfill the other goals of the department;

  • Recruits, develops and evaluates management personnel;

  • Evaluates senior department management personnel.

Essential Expanded Client-related Job Duties

  • Supports marketing and sales business development efforts by communicating and demonstrating the service capabilities through written materials, personal meetings and conferences;

  • Ensures client satisfaction through excellent relationship management, testing quality and timely contractual execution.

  • May be asked to participate ion client calls and/or attend Bid Defense meetings

Managerial Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for providing global leadership in developing Covance’s capabilities using outsourced laboratories

  • Serves as the expert and global resource;

  • Responsible for driving overall performance and delivery of on-time solutions

  • Responsible for initiating and supporting business development activities;

  • Responsible for ensuring client satisfaction;

  • Responsible for meeting established quality measures and on-time responses to quality issues

  • Accountable for the implementation, monitoring and reporting of performance metrics and take corrective action when appropriate

  • Provide a monthly report to the Director of Laboratory Support Solutions

  • Actively participates with the Director of Laboratory Support Solutions in the strategic planning and management of the global expanded laboratory network.

  • Individual is responsible for maintaining his/her complete up-to-date training file. Individual is responsible for ensuring he/she is trained and training is documented prior to performing a task. Individual is accountable for any deficiencies found in his/her training file.

  • Participate in team tasks related to planning, budgeting and cross laboratory operation

  • Support a culture of continuous improvement, quality and productivity

We are seeking a Bachelor's degree or equivalent degree. Prefer degree in Biology, Chemistry, MedicalTechnology or other Life Science.

Prefer a Master's degree or other Advanced degree in a scientific discipline or Business Administration.

Fluent in English. Command of French is a plus.

  1. Requires 7 years global management experience

  2. 5 to 7 years experience leading cross functional and matrix initiatives in the laboratory within Covance CLS is preferred

  3. Ability to effectively communicate internally at all levels of the organizations
