Covance Research Assistant / Study Technician DART/Necropsy in Greenfield, Indiana

Job Overview

Covance is hiring Study Technicians for our DART/Necropsy department in Greenfield, IN site.

Perform advanced necropsy laboratory procedures including but not limited to: dissection, tissue collection/preservation, fresh tissue trimming, sample collection, data entry, tissue weights, coordinate unscheduled activities, prosection, perfusions, assay specific requirements, CSF collection, and electronic QC, in compliance with appropriate SOP, Protocol, and Regulatory Agency guidelines. Will perform administrative roles within department. Knowledgeable of inter-site processes and procedures and can identify gaps for process excellence. Serve as a resource for others in an area of specific focus. Must know correct anatomic terms.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Reports all animal care concerns and becomes involved in resolution and appropriate corrective action, when necessary

  • Ensures that studies are conducted according to protocol, SOPs, IACCUC, and government regulations

  • Can interpret and understand a basic protocol

  • Basic understanding of good research practice (GRP) principles

  • Performs a data review of study materials with minimal quality control (QC) findings and understands the level of a quality assurance (QA) audit

  • Recognizes deviations from expected results and takes appropriate action.

  • Provides quality study management, data organization, QA audit response, internal and external client communication skills, and quality check procedures.

  • Maintains client confidentiality at all times

  • Effectively manages time and resources, e.g., equipment, rooms, study supplies

  • Aware of inspection process, e.g., member of inspection team, inspection ready, correcting inspection findings

  • May be involved in Process Excellence initiatives

  • Collaboration across components

  • Utilizes computer software for forms and procedure generation.

  • Serves as a lead technician on management approved studies

  • Provides quality study management, data organization, QA audit response, internal and external client communication skills, and quality check procedures.

  • Performs various methods of euthanasia on multiple species according to USDA regulations

  • Able to adapt techniques to new procedures or particular needs as directed.

  • May be involved in client tours or client interaction during study initiations.

  • Operates tensiometer

  • Performs multiple tissue freezing techniques and measuring of tissues utilizing calipers

  • Performs histological trimming, bagging of tissues, and embedding

  • Performs exsanguination, gross necropsy, and tissue collections on multiple species

  • Performs multiple fluid sample collection routes on rodents and creates bone and blood smear slides

  • Perform cesarean sections and laparohysterectemy on rodents and rabbits including capturing uterine weight, identifying early and late resorptions, live and dead fetuses and any placental or uterine abnormalities

  • Accurately identifies and counts corpora lutea

  • Accurately performs and reports external fetal examinations on rodents and rabbits

  • Prepares tissues/fetuses for inventory and archiving

  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor degree in Life Sciences, Associate degree in Laboratory Animal Technology or Associate degree in Veterinary Technology.

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education.

  • AALAS certification at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician level is preferred, but not required.


  • No experience is required if you meet the education requirements.

  • 0-2 years of related external experience based on education.

  • A minimum of 6 months experience as a Study Tech Trainee while employed at Covance, or a minimum of two years of related experience may be substituted for education requirements
